Date of birth? March, 3rd 1972 City of birth? Trieste / Italy Name of your father, mother, sister, brother (older or younger?)? No brothers or sisters. My father's name was Luigi, my mother's name is Nelly. Are you married? Do you have children? Neither married, nor children. I don't think I would have any time for children. All the travelling and promotion would prevent me from being a perfect father but that is what I want to be, when the time comes. Where did you go to school? I went to a high school for mathematics in Trieste. I didn't like school much but I am happy that my parents sent me there because this kind of school increases your knowledge of culture and gives you a better picture of life. Even when things aren't perfect, school prepares you for your future life as an adult in a social system in which we live every day. When did you pass your examinations and with which degree? I took my exams when I was 21. Normally it is not easy to find a job having just passed exams because you have not specialised in a specific field yet. The only thing I could think of to do was to register at university. Did you study? What is your profession? At some point I decided to break off my studies. I wanted to make music and not waste hours and hours on things which conflicted with my ideas of that time. That is why I formed the band Thundercross with Alex and our former drummer Daniele. When did you start making music? I bought my first guitar when I was 16. At the time my aim was to play concertos by Bach and Vivaldi on the guitar. I thought it was a great idea but it was frustrating, because it was incredibly difficult to play the baroque notes on a guitar. Plus having to jump from one string to another without any pause whatsoever. What was the first instrument you learned? My first instrument was a flute. When I was 14 I just wanted to play the flute, then I went off it. The passion for music came a bit later, when I was 15 or 16. What was the first instrument you bought? The first instrument I ever bought was a guitar. I sold it again two months later because I thought it would be better to learn to play the keyboard. So I spent a small fortune on a keyboard, before I found out that I preferred the guitar after all. The guitar is simply the best instrument for me to express my musical personality. And after having heard such great guitarists such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Jason Becker I was sure that I had made the right decision. My first guitar was an Ibanez Roadstar 550, an instrument with a very flat body. Over the next ten years I have only bought two other guitars. What is your current equipment? Mesa Boogie pre-amplifier and loudspeakers, Rocktron effects, and my three faithful S-series Ibanez guitars. When I compose music on my computer (a Pentium III) I use a new Roland expander, the XV - 5080 to be able to program the great classical sounds. What was the first record you bought? My first heavy metal album was Helloween's "Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II". That began my love for german speed melodic metal, and the album probably had a huge influence on my career as a musician. Who are your heroes? Amongst guitarists I love Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen and all the neo-classical guitar heroes such as Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, etc. Lately I have discovered an exciting new guitarist called George Bellas. As everyone knows, I love rapid-fire playing and he really is a maestro of that. My favourite bands are (or were) Manowar, Yngwie Malmsteen, Blind Guardian, Crimson Glory, Symphony X, Helloween and Cacophony. Amongst the new young bands, I particularly like Nightwish. What was the first concert you visited? I think it was Yngwie Malmsteen in Milan on his "Fire And Ice" tour. I didn't particularly like Goran Edman's voice but Yngwie`s performance was excellent as usual. The worst memory of that evening was that I had eaten a pizza in a restaurant before the concert and I was sick from all the excitement. That happened when I was waiting outside with all the other fans for the doors to open. I messed up four or five people's leather jackets.. Very funny, hahaha. What was the best concert you ever saw? I haven't been to all the concerts I would like to have seen, but Dream Theater on their "Images And Word" tour and Manowar on their "Triumph Of Steel" tour were brilliant. What is your ultimate favourite record? My taste changes almost from day to day. When I need some energy I listen to "The Gallery", that great Dark Tranquillity album. When I want to listen to symphonic metal I like Nightwish's excellent albums. If I feel in a most complex mood, then I prefer Symphony X. And when I've had a beer or two, which doesn't happen often, then Bad Religion and NOFX are the kings of my hifi system - real punkrock energy. For guitar oriented albums I can only think of one name: Cacophony. Their debut album, "Speed Metal Symphony" is a bible for speed-pickers and in my opinion it is an absolute must-have for every six string technician. When and where did you meet the other guys from Rhapsody for the first time? I met Alex ten years ago during a course about the power of the soul. We both loved the subject because we both believe in the energy of the soul and its connection to the cosmos. Two years later we began playing in Thundercross. We contacted Fabio direct from the studio in Wolfsburg, when we needed someone to sing on the "Legendary Tales" album. I remember the day, when we picked him up at the station in Wolfsburg. He seemed a nice person at first, but later, in the studio, when he was singing the first notes from "Land Of Immortals", he threw the microphone onto the floor and yelled, "this is absolute shit!" Alex, myself and our patient producer, Sascha Paeth looked at each other in horror. I could have strangled Fabio but now I can laugh about it. It wasn't easy working with him, hahaha. Alessandro Lotta was a friend of Daniele, Alex and myself and I met him before the recording sessions for "Symphony Of Enchanted Lands". The newest band member, our drummer, Alex Holzwarth was hired just before the tour with Stratovarius. What is your favorite Rhapsody song? I'd like to name at least three songs here: "Emerald Sword" from "Symphony Of Enchanted Lands", "Holy Thunderforce" and "The Last Winged Unicorn" from the new album. What was the best experience on the Stratovarius tour? The shows in Milan and in Budapest were incredible. The atmosphere was like back in the eighties and the bodyguards had to protect us from the crowd. Apart from that, I remember Jens Johansson building a bomb and blowing up a toilet backstage. He's definitely the most crazy person I have ever met. Can you read notes? Yes, I studied piano for two years in order to learn everything I could about notes, scales and classical manuscripts. It was a very important decision for me because I still use what I learned to integrate complex orchestral arrangements into our music. How often do you practice? I spend most of my time composing, but sometimes, when I have composed a solo which I can't play straight off, I practice. I wish I had more time to improve my technique but at the moment I simply don't have the time. Maybe sometime in the future when a day has 36 hours instead of only 24 my dream will come true. Do you make music besides with Rhapsody? Where and under what name? A year ago I began my solo career under my own name and I will be releasing my second album in September. The songs are already finished and I am very happy with the material. It is really high quality stuff and all Luca Turilli fans all over the world can look forward to it. What is your aim with Rhapsody? To win over an even larger number of fans worldwide. Not because more fans mean more money but because it gives Alex and myself huge satisfaction to write positive music and to be in a position to reach thousands of people of different cultures, backgrounds and nationalities and to unite them through their love of our symphonies. That is a tremendous thought. What are your private plans for the future? I would like to work hard in the next three or four years to truly establish my name in the metal community. After that I will probably need a break to relax and to take certain important decisions concerning my private life. This is not the most important aspect of my existence but one of the important ones. Do you want to say something to your fans? Not many people know that I had cancer, which kept me chained to a hospital bed. So I'd like to give our fans some important advice: life, as we know it, is unique. Don't waste it - enjoy it and follow the highest goals you can set yourself. Respect mother earth and find your own links between your soul and the deepest cosmos because that is where you will find the secrets of life. The energy is within us all - we alone can decide what sort of perspective our existence should have. I have decided to serve goodness and to fight evil wherever I can. Rape victims are my sisters, mistreated children are my sons and daughters. All kinds of injustice makes me want to take revenge for all kinds of overt brutality. These are the basics of my philosophy and which can also be found within Rhapsody's lyrics - in the "Emerald Sword Saga", too. What can we expect from Rhapsody in 2001? A headliner or a co-headliner tour, some summer festivals and a lot of promotion work. Alex and I are currently working on the official Rhapsody website. This is an important subject for me because I always wanted to see my band on the internet. It is a real step into the future. And in that way every fan has the chance to chat with us, to order merchandise and so on. Another idea is the realisation of "Emerald Sword Saga" comics. I think the result will be brilliant, because, in our designer, Marc Klinnert, we have a really talented artist . Apart from that Alex and I have also had an idea to help all those musicians who want to play a Rhapsody song. We will be publishing a book with all the notes of our compositions, including guitar tabs, complete keyboard notes etc. I hope that we can get all this done by next year. But anyway, we are working hard for the name of our band and out of love for and in the interest of our fans! |
